Tragic Death of Nicol Rescata, Former Drug Addict Turned Social Media Influencer

Ecuador has been shocked by the murder of Nicol Montenegro, 23, a former drug addict turned social media influencer who had transformed her life. She was found shot dead near a warehouse in Yaguachi, a town in the Pacific coast province of Guayas on Saturday, August 4.

The young woman was discovered lying face down, having been shot multiple times in the head, as reported by Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo.

According to warehouse workers, they heard several gunshots around 3:30 am while sleeping inside. The workers found Montenegro’s lifeless body next to a rice grinding machine, approximately 1,600 feet from the building on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities discovered a bottle of gasoline and a box of matches near the body, which the suspects had left. It is believed that the workers’ intervention prevented the suspects from setting Montenegro’s body on fire after they turned the lights on.

As of Thursday afternoon, no arrests have been made.

Montenegro rose to fame on social media after overcoming her struggle with drug addiction several years ago. She used her own experiences to guide young people away from similar paths, amassing a strong following on YouTube and TikTok, with over 80,000 followers. Her content included videos of her visits and motivational talks with recovering addicts.

She was a mother to a four-year-old girl. Her family identified her body at a local morgue and transported it to the province of Los Rïos, south of the country’s capital, Quito, where a funeral service was held in her hometown of Babahoyo.
