History of Pohela Falgun
What began as an unplanned Pahela Falgun celebration in 1991 has eternally linked a handful of students from Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts with affection and a memory that has grown into a larger event.
Some staff members bought saris on the eve of PahelaFalgun, the first day of spring on the Bangla calendar that year, and spent the night at Moitree Hall printing blocks on them. They wore the saris to faculty the next day. The Ekushey Boi Mela, which was taking place nearby, contributed to the fun.
Boys from batch 89 then joined the girls in a procession carrying flowers, butterflies, and birds created out of colored papers to commemorate the movement’s victory over the dictatorial dictatorship of HM Ershad a year earlier. They recited rhymes they had learned as children as they wandered about the campus.
The next year, in 1992, students at the DU faculty organized a little program in which they placed abir on each other’s foreheads as a token of friendship, and in 1993, they celebrated Holi, a celebration of colors that heralds the advent of spring.
A few years later, students from the fine arts department and other departments began organizing cultural events to commemorate Pohela Falgun, when a Bangla year, like any other, prepares to conclude on a pleasant note.
The Falgun event was one of several endeavors by students of fine arts to preserve Bangalee rural traditions alive. Previously, Falgun had been all about wearing warm colors like yellow and orange in Bangladesh, as opposed to West Bengal in India.
Celebration of Pohela Falgun
Pohela Falgun is held at Dhaka University, which has traditionally been the cultural heartbeat of Dhaka city. The festival’s focal point is the Bakultola of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
Thousands of young men and women assemble in the morning to sing songs, recite poems, and dance to commemorate the day. The Ekeushy Boi Mela grounds and the entire DU campus become the greatest spots to hang out with friends, family, and loved ones.
For nearly two decades, the Jatiya Boshonto Utshab Udjapan Parishad has organized the day’s principal programs. Apart from regular activities, the Parishad organizes a variety of programs, including songs and poetry recitations.
Band concerts take place throughout campus, with a larger attendance expected later in the day. Various private institutions and colleges also hold events to commemorate the day. Every year, people across the country celebrate the day to welcome the ‘flower season,’ which represents youth, vigor, and love.
