Dawber attended North Farmington High School and Oakland Community College. She began her professional career as a fashion model, then turned to professional acting. She had a leading role in the stock production of the musical comedy Swee Adeline, which led to an audition for a major role on the television series Tabitha (1977). However, she did not get the part, instead getting a role in the Robert Altman film A Wedding (1978).
