Frank Howard biography and career

Frank Oliver Howard, the third of six children born to John and Erma Howard, was a native of Columbus, Ohio. His father, a machinist for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, was a former semi-professional baseball player who encouraged his son’s interest in the sport.

Howard attended South High School in Columbus before enrolling at Ohio State University, where he excelled in both basketball and baseball, earning All-American honours in both sports. In 1957, he averaged an impressive 20.1 points and 15.3 rebounds per game and was subsequently drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the National Basketball Association.

Howard went on to have a successful career in baseball, earning the National League’s Rookie of the Year award in 1960 and leading the American League in several statistical categories. His impressive career included 382 home runs, which ranked him eighth among right-handed hitters at the time of his retirement.

Additionally, his franchise records for the Washington/Texas team included 1,172 games, 4,120 at-bats, 246 home runs, 1,141 hits, 701 RBI, 544 runs, 155 doubles, 2,074 total bases, and a .503 slugging percentage, many of which have since been broken.

After spending the 1958 season with the Green Bay Bluejays of the Class B Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League, Howard signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He dominated the league with 37 home runs and 119 RBIs, earning a promotion to the major leagues after the minor league season.

Howard hit his first MLB home run over 29 at-bats and began the 1959 season with the Victoria Rosebuds of the Double-A Texas League. He continued his impressive performance, hitting .356 with 27 home runs and 79 RBIs in 261 at-bats before being promoted to the major leagues again.

Although he struggled with a .105 batting average in 19 at-bats for the Dodgers, Howard’s talent was undeniable. He was eventually demoted to the Spokane Indians of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League on July 1, where he excelled with a .319 average, 16 home runs, and 47 RBIs across 295 at-bats. Howard’s outstanding performance earned him The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year Award.

After retiring as a player, Howard went on to coach for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1977 to 1980. Subsequently, he was appointed as the manager of the 1981 San Diego Padres. Unfortunately, the team performed poorly, finishing in last place during both halves of the strike-marred season, which led to Howard’s dismissal.

In 1982, he joined the Mets as a coach and later took over as manager for the final 116 games in 1983 following George Bamberger’s resignation. However, the team once again ended up in last place. Throughout his career, Howard achieved a managerial record of 93–133. He continued to coach for various teams, including the Brewers (1985–86), Mets (1994–96), Seattle Mariners (1987–88), Yankees (1989, 1991–93), and Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998–99). Since 2000, he has been employed by the Yankees as a player development instructor.
